My New York Fashion Week began on Thursday night at The Commerce Inn, where Highsnobiety hosted a dinner with Levi’s. By the time dessert was served, I’d found out about *that* NSFW Drake video… And watched it twice. Everyone at my table had already seen it, and the fact that I was a day late to the whole thing made me far more upset than the video’s content. You want to talk about a media apocalypse? This is it. Where were the devestatingly clever blogs?? If it were 2015, I would have had to take a personal day to read and laugh at all of them. I guess now I need to find some better group chats.
By Friday, Drake’s you-know-what was old news. It was time to talk about clothes. Colleen Allen, a new name on the calendar whose designs I’ll get to in a minute, got things off to a great start. I also enjoyed going to shows by brands whose stuff I actually buy and wear, specifically: Eckhaus Latta, Sandy Liang, and Kallmeyer. By comparison, Tory Burch has not actually convinced me to buy anything yet. Neither has Helmut Lang or Proenza Schouler. But they’ve come close.
I really liked the looks of Altuzarra, who celebrated his 15th anniversary this season. But for such a big milestone, I’m not sure I understood what made the collection uniquely his. Could you pull it out of a lineup and go, Oh, yeah, that’s Altuzarra? I don’t think I could. Fforme was stunning. (Yes, that’s how you spell it.) I profiled the designer, Paul Helbers for W magazine’s next issue, so don’t miss it! And I love that Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola showed up for their friend, Anna Sui. Her collection was fun!! I also smiled at Batsheva’s over-40 lineup.
Today’s the last day of shows. In the meantime, here’s a recap of what I’ve seen so far…
Best Front Row
Once again, I found myself copying Alison Roman, who wore what is now my favorite Eckhaus Latta dress to the show on Saturday. (It took place in the old New York magazine office building, which was weird. Apocalypse, indeed!) She told me she was also wearing the lipstick she bought during our excursion to Bergdorfs a few months ago. I’ve since purchased the YSL one she recommended in another color because it really is that good.
