What Year Was It On the Oscars Red Carpet?
Throwback looks underscored how artificial "timeless" style and beauty is today.
Every year before the Oscars, photos of red carpets past circulate on social media. This year, one of Jodie Foster and Al Pacino at the 1993 ceremony was all over my feed. In it, Jodie, who presented Al with the Best Actor trophy for his role in Scent of a Woman, looks naturally gorgeous, with her hair tossed messily over one side. Al looks like young Al, which is to say: very good.
Both showed up again to the awards ceremony last night. Jodie, 61, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Nyad, and Al, 83, did a fantastically bad job announcing the Best Picture winner. Both still look great — Jodie in Loewe and Al in his own special way — and it was refreshing to see two people who, 31 years later, actually appeared 31 years older, as they should.
